We at Outokumpu are now looking for a Research & Development Engineer for the Process Physical Metallurgy team within the Global R&D organization. Location of the position is in Avesta, Sweden.
As a team member in an international R&D team, you will support and work towards success in accordance with our strategy and the R&D must win battle, sustainable production process technologies and future products and applications.
Outokumpu R&D is a global function working together with all Outokumpu sites and functions. We are the provider of leading technical expertise. We enable a sustainable future and create extraordinary value for our partners inside and outside of Outokumpu.
The R&D Process Physical Metallurgy department consists of twenty employees located in Finland, Sweden and Germany with excellent experience and competence in processing and development of stainless steel. The department is responsible for development and optimization of material processes from casting to finished goods with a sound foundation in material science.
Main responsibilities include:
Participate in R&D projects as team member responsible for testing in the respective field
Perform testing independently according to internal standard and given external standards
Independently create test plans to complete a task in an R&D project
Documentation and presentation of testing results within R&D
Development, improvement, and validation of testing methods
Responsibility for and development of R&D equipment, analysis methods and laboratory
Instruction of students and trainees in the respective field

Qualifications:
BSc, state-certified technician, or equivalent experience
Knowledge and experience of microscopy such as LOM, SEM, FIB, EBSD
Good understanding of testing standards in the respective field
Language skills (both oral and written) in English
Basic understanding of relationship between product and production process
Good ability to cooperate with colleagues

Main responsibilities include:
Initiate, lead and run R&D projects both internally and in cooperation with universities, institutes, and external customers.
Provide advanced technical support related to processing of stainless steel to operations.
Development of new technical knowledge and initiate the development of new technologies for future challenges.
Provide expertise and support to operations and customers across all Outokumpu.
Follow up current development trends and identify potential development areas in the field of expertise.
Proactive in proposing and defining projects.
Responsibility for and development of R&D equipment and analysis methods.
Represent the company in internal and external assignments such as technology associations, conferences, supplier, and customer visits.

Who are you?

Qualifications:
M.Sc./Ph.D. in material science, chemical engineering, chemistry, or another relevant field.
Deep knowledge in the field of physical metallurgy.
Good knowledge and experience of microscopy such as LOM, SEM, FIB, EBSD.
Proven project management capabilities.
Genuine interest in research and stainless steels.
You are an extremely motivated and independently acting personality with an ability to build and manage internal/external networks:
You thrive by innovation and lead your work with integrity and cooperation in mind.
Working proficiency in English is required. Swedish language is considered an advantage.
